Canadian Brand
Proudly Canadian brand based in Montreal.
We didn't build a brand. We went looking for a feeling, and brought it back for you.
Clothing as calm as your breath. MALGVEN

We didn't set out to start a brand. We set out to fix a feeling.

Charlotte had just come back from a trip to Marrakech. She brought home a caftan — one single piece — and wore it every day for a week. To the market. To dinner. Barefoot in the kitchen on a Sunday morning. She kept saying the same thing to Amélie and Olivia: "I don't understand why nothing I own at home makes me feel this way."

That sentence sat with the three of us for months.

We're not designers. Charlotte is a textile researcher. Amélie spent eight years working with ethical sourcing organizations across North Africa and the Middle East. Olivia ran a small tailoring studio in Montreal for a decade before burning out on fast fashion clients. We were three friends who had, separately, become deeply uncomfortable with what the fashion industry was selling women — and deeply in love with what artisan makers in Morocco and Tunisia were creating.

So in the winter of 2021, we flew to Fès. Not to source. Just to understand.

The name behind the brand

Malgven comes from Celtic legend — a queen of the North, described in ancient Breton tradition as a woman who crossed the sea on Morvarc'h, "the horse of the sea." She didn't abandon where she came from. She carried it with her.

That's exactly what a caftan is.

A garment that has crossed worlds, from the royal courts of the Maghreb, through centuries of artisan tradition, through the hands of women who kept the craft alive when no one was watching. Not a trend. A piece of knowledge, stitched into fabric, carried across time by people who knew some things are worth protecting.

The name behind the brand

What we found there changed everything we thought we knew about making clothes.

We met Fatima Zahra in a small workshop off a side street in the Fès medina. She had been doing hand embroidery — specifically the ancient tarz technique — since she was fourteen years old. She was fifty-two. She showed us pieces that took thirty hours to complete. Thirty hours of her hands, her eyes, her knowledge passed down through her family.

Those pieces were being sold for less than the price of a dinner in Montreal.

We didn't want to "save" anything. We weren't interested in performing charity or wrapping exploitation in a feel-good story. What we wanted was simple and uncomfortable: to pay what something is actually worth, and to build a business where that was the baseline — not the marketing angle.

We went back to Canada and spent fourteen months figuring out how to do that properly before we sold a single caftan.

What we found there changed everything we thought we knew about making clothes.

Every caftan carries a name. Because every caftan was made by a person.

Each piece in our collection includes a small card with the name of the artisan who made it and where it was made. Not as a marketing feature. Because we think you deserve to know whose hands built what you're wearing.

Our makers are paid above fair trade standards — a minimum of 2.3x the local industry rate. Every workshop we work with has been visited in person by one of us before a single order is placed. We don't use intermediaries. We don't offshore our quality checks. We go ourselves.

This is slower. It limits how much we can make. That's a choice we made on purpose.

On fit, and why we spent six months obsessing over it before we launched.

Olivia spent the first year of Malgven doing one thing almost exclusively: fit testing. One hundred and twelve women across six Canadian cities, different body types, different heights, different ages. Every version of every silhouette went through multiple rounds before it was approved.

Because a caftan is only as magical as its fit. Wear one that's wrong for your body and it feels like a costume. Wear one that's right and it feels like it was made for you specifically.

We build our sizing around real bodies, not industry averages. Our size range runs from M to 2XL with proportional adjustments — not just scaled-up versions of a size 6 pattern. And if something doesn't fit perfectly when it arrives, we'll work with you to make it right.

A note from Amélie on why we're telling you all of this.

Most About Us pages are written to reassure you that a brand is good. We know that. We're not naive about what this page is for.

But here's what we also know, from eight years of working in sourcing: the brands that hide how they operate are usually hiding something worth hiding. We believe the opposite approach. Show you everything. Tell you where things come from, who made them, what we got wrong, what we're still working on. Let you decide if that's a brand you want to support.

We've had customers email us to say they bought a caftan because they trusted us, not because they loved the product first. That's the thing we're most proud of.

We're three women from Montreal who fell in love with a garment tradition that deserved more respect than it was getting. We're trying to give it that. We hope you'll join us.
